BAROQUE ‘N’ ROLL COMES TO BRIXTON 5/9/24
In the week when 2 warring brothers reunited to milk their loyal fanbase with the outrageous dynamic live ticket pricing demands of Ticketmaster it was a pleasure to go and check out the harmonious brothers Brian & Michael D’Addario 6 years and 4 albums after I had previously seen them perform across the country in front of small but enthusiastic crowds at various venues. This gig was my first trip to the Electric in Brixton but I’m old enough to remember its previous incarnation The Fridge. Support band Tchotchke got a rousing reception and finished their set with a cover of…
TLT have been described as a power pop, indie rock, glam rock, indie pop & jangle pop band but I would suggest that they are a combination of more than those genres although they wear their influences heavily on their sleeves. I heard snippets of The Beatles, Queen, Supertramp, Todd Rundgren, Crowded House and even a little bit of John Denver in one of the ballads.
The Lemon Twigs took to the stage at 9pm and it was a joy to see keyboardist and guitarist Danny Ayala had rejoined the live touring line-up.
Concentrating on playing tracks from their current new album A Dream Is All We Know the set consisted of 9 tracks from this release and 5 from previous album Everything Harmony as well as I Wanna Prove To You just the one from debut album Do Hollywood as well as a few other random songs.
Opening the set with the first single from the new album My Golden Years was a pure power pop ballad that set the tone for the evening. This was quickly followed by In My Head & What You Were Doing from the Everything Harmony album. The band who have the best brotherly harmonies since Alessi Brothers (Oh Lori / Seabird) in the 70’s were having as much fun as the crowd and even a minor disagreement between the brothers was laughed off by Brian with a snappy “Michael – We run a tight ship and we will have a conversation after the gig”.
The highlight of the set for me was a beautiful rendition of Ghost Run Free and after 90 minutes they finished the set with a rousing cover of The Beach Boys Good Vibrations.
Testimony to how good they were the queue for the merch stand after the gig snaked round the venue and we enjoyed waiting in line with the fans of all ages who were buzzing and smiling as they knew they’d witnessed something very special indeed…
If you haven’t seen The Lemon Twigs go and see them before they are playing arena size venues… You won’t be disappointed.
BTW for those who asked no they didn’t play Matchstalk Cats & Dogs!
